Another 5:30 am wake up and pleasant drive to Monterey coast via Highway 17.
During Car Week, there is always a traffic jam between Santa Cruz and Sand City, where you can get stuck for a good thirty minutes and miss the start of the tour.
Miraculously, we passed the intersection of 17 Miles Drive and PCH ten minutes before 9 am — the scheduled starting time.
1910 – 1930s
It was a breezy and foggy morning with scattered sunlit patches, but we kept driving further toward the Ripplewood Resort — the tour’s turnaround point. We thought the fog would clear down the road, but it didn’t happen — sunny patches were left behind — closer to Carmel-by-the-Sea.
The drive down PCH was enjoyable — very little traffic and so many people sitting next to the road with photographers hanging off various cliffs and bluffs. We pretended that they were cheering for us!
Flip off from a senior owner of a beautiful red Alfa Romeo GT we’ve been following brought me back to reality.
1950 – 1960s
It was ten minutes past nine and time to find our own bluff! Look at this amazing rock formation right on a beach. We thought it would look fabulous in pictures when the fog cleared up. Well, it never did and was out of the frame anyway.
And here they come — beautiful, different, and out-of-this-world cars led by a police officer on a motorbike.
Modern Stuff
Every year on the tour I get to see cars I didn’t know existed. Some are absolutely stunning, and all are just like historical marbles rolling down the road. Some are rumbling more than others.
Special thanks to owners dressing up to match their vehicles! My favorite is the 1912 Simplex Torpedo Tourer, with the driver and passenger wearing steam-punk goggles while the second-row passenger is open to all winds and freezing to their death. That car was recently sold for $4.8 million.
Usually, there are two tour groups with a short break in between. Some spectators stay in their lawn chairs after the tour has passed to see other Car Week participants arriving in the area, and there is a lot to look at or stay in traffic with.
Plan two hours for this birds cars along the coast watching experience.
