2022 Monterey Pre-Reunion at Laguna Seca

It’s been a while since the event, and I didn’t make any notes, that’s why this one is mostly pictures. Generally speaking, Pre-Reunion is a weekend before the main Reunion event of the bustling Monterey Car Week. It’s a much calmer, more affordable and less crowded experience.

Yet you get to see 85% of cars bound for the Reunion, but without exhibition pavilions (greatly missed!), travelling village of concession stands or entertainment events for spectators.

It’s a great option to offload busy Monterey Car Week weekend schedule. Especially if you’ve been to a Reunion event before. But if you have not — go for the main course and attend Laguna Seca on the following weekend — it’s truly is a spectacle.

The most unexpected and precious finding is the 1966 LeMans winner — Ford GT40 #2, chassis #1046. Restored in 2014–2016 to the original LeMans race condition in RK Motors by the current owner — Rob Kauffman.

This exact car was driven by Bruce Mclaren and crossed finish line as second, but was declared a race winner due to the longer distance travelled since the start of the race. And that’s how Ken Miles was robbed off his first and only LeMans victory.

After restoration, it was presented at Pebble Beach in 2016, where it won the special-of-the-year Ford GT40 class.

Another interesting find is the 1956 Jaguar D-type with the tail fin featuring running number 4. It looks very similar to the $22 million 1956 LeMans overall winner D-Type, raced by Ecurie Ecosse. That was manufactured in 1955, however, and has some visual differences from this one.

Also, I keep seeing Revs Institute Fiat 600 at Laguna Seca events. You can’t pass this cute bubble car without a smile. Better than new condition.
